Die politische Bedeutung Münsters über Jahrhunderte zeigt sich in herausragenden Ereignissen: Etwa die Beteiligung in der Beendigung des Dreißigjährigen Krieges, oder die Rolle, die Münster bei der Gründung der Niederlande spielte. Sie zeigt sich noch heute in enger Verbundenheit der Stadt mit dem Nachbarland.
